Chrome’s “Incognito Mode”

So I decided to download Chrome to check it out, and I’m looking through the getting started page, when I come upon a feature called “Incognito Mode” Now, this is it according to Google:

For times when you want to browse in stealth mode, for example, to plan surprises like gifts or birthdays, you can browse the Web without leaving behind search history or cookies.

Now, who else out there doubts entirely that “Incognito Mode” will EVER be used for shopping? I mean sure, Safari has a feature like that as well (Private Browsing), but I find Google’s description to be a nice was to dodge saying “THIS IS FOR HIDING PORN!”

Google Chrome

I spent the last few minutes playing around with Google Chrome (Yes I was in econ; no I don’t think my education suffered). It was amazingly fast on Google pages (it ought to be) but everywhere else it seemed to work about the same as other browsers. It has a simple user interface and a nifty new tab screen. Overall I wasn’t blown away by any of the features and so, I think Firefox’s extensions will keep me where I am. Still I might take it over IE.

Picasa 3 Comes Out Today

Chrome isn’t Google’s only release for today. They are also bringing out Picasa 3. I’m not a big fan of Picasa, but maybe version 3 will change that. It’s supposed to have some nice features including intelligently tagging people in photos (hmm…wonder how well that’ll work). Either way, I’m hoping to get a camera soon, so maybe I’ll start using it more.

Sun Has A Spotless Month

August was the sun’s first spotless month since 1913. Solar activity has declined for the past several years and finally this past month there were no spots. What effect this has on…well, anything… I have no idea.

Google Chrome

Google is releasing it’s new web browser later today. NEW GOOGLE PRODUCT, YAY!!!! Yea, I’m excited, but at the same time, I don’t think I can bring myself to give up Firefox. I love it too much. I’ll try out Chrome for a while and see how it goes.

Does this picture make anyone else think of a Pokeball?

Microsoft patented Page Up Page Down buttons?

Microsoft has recently been granted a patent for a ”method and system for navigating paginated content in page-based increments” That they applied for in 2005. This is essentially the page up and page down buttons on about every keyboard…

This got me thinking about other things Microsoft has tried to patent in the past, which includes ”A method, comprising: selecting pixels to be used as an emoticon” (smileys). Microsoft also holds patents on double-clicking buttons and a scrolling mouse wheel, which is also common throughout the computing world.

This just seems ridiculous to me, but it begs the question of who came up with this idea of page up and page down buttons first? The earliest I could find was an IBM keyboard from 1981 with the buttons.

The Fall Of CAPTCHAs

We’re all familiar with those annoying pictures of letters and numbers you have to identify before you can register for anything on the internet. The goal of these CAPTCHAs is to prevent spammers from using bots to sign up for accounts on these internet services. Sadly it seems the spammers have found a way around the CAPTCHAs…pay people to solve them for you. In India, there is already an industry dedicated to solving CAPTCHAs. People are working for $2 per 1000 CAPTCHAs. So what this really means, is I still have to interpret those evil things, why the spammers don’t have to do anything.

Android Developer Challenge Concludes

Google has announced the winners of it’s Android Developer Challenge. Just glancing through some of the winning apps, there are some REALLY good ideas in there. The most noble app I saw was one that examines your commutes and the like and gives you suggestions on how to become more carbon neutral (carpooling, transit alternatives, etc). The app that grabbed my attention the most is one that lets you take a picture of a product’s bar code while in the store, and it will compare the product’s price in various other stores. Along with the Dream handset coming soon, there will be an app store…I kinda just want to play with these apps now…forget homework.

She’s Not A Witch

The last person executed in Europe for being a witch was exonerated today. This is 200 years after she was beheaded. (A lot of good that did her right?) Anyway, I guess it’s nice that they cleared her name. Although how can they say she wasn’t a witch…of course she was…I mean didn’t she weigh the same as a duck?
